The prestigious Salon Carré, located between the Galerie d’Apollon and the Grande Galerie, which used to house the Paris Salon, is hosting an exceptional exhibition of Pierre Soulages, the “painter of black and light,” a major figure of non-figurative painting, lasting through March 9, 2020.
The tribute exhibition chronologically surveys the development of Soulages’s work from 1946 to the present day, through a limited selection of pieces created over eight decades of artistic inquiry. Soulages’s exceptionally long career is represented by some of his major works, most of them from prominent French and foreign museums. The exhibition covers every period, with a focus on the outrenoir polyptychs, and celebrates the 100th birthday of Rodez-born centenarian on December 24. It also presents a portion of large canvas paintings executed in recent months, demonstrating the remarkable vitality of Soulages, who has never stopped working.
